Geometric Performance of ENVISAT ASAR Products

چکیده
We describe validation measurements of the geometric accuracy of ASAR images, measured redundantly via independent methods. Our tests include image (IM), alternating polarisation (AP), and wide swath (WS) mode acquisitions over a variety of test sites. ASAR's slant range products (IMS/APS) require a slightly different validation methodology than ground range precision (IMP, APP) and medium resolution products (IMM, APM, WSM). A third approach is required for ellipsoidgeocoded products (IMG, APG). The most highly accurate validation is possible with singlelook complex (SLC) data (IMS & APS products), as all other product types lose resolution during multilooking. For a library of ground control points (GCPs) including map features such as bridges or road intersections, as well as (where available) transponders and corner reflectors, we use surveyed or map-measured position information (together with the delay value in the case of transponders) to solve the Zero-Doppler iteration and predict the position of the GCP as an azimuth and slant range coordinate in the radar image. In the case of ground range products (e.g. IMP, APP, IMM, APM, WSM) the predicted slant range value is additionally transformed by a slant to ground range transformation to determine the predicted image coordinate. The GCP feature is then either measured by inspection of a detected image, or localized automatically within the neighbourhood of the prediction. GCPs are measured within the radar geometry image products, derivative geocoded products, and topographic maps, providing their measured map, radar geometry, and nominally geocoded GTC locations. Radar image locations are compared to map reference values and statistics of differences are tabulated. We compare the accuracies of the estimates achievable using transponders and map GCPs. Based on the suite of products (and accompanying orbit information) available to us, we establish a methodology for estimating a preliminary sampling window start time bias. The multiple validation and estimation techniques used ensure robust determination of ASAR geolocation accuracy.

This paper summarizes the first results on interferometric ENVISAT/ ASAR image mode products [1]. We analyzed timing and geometric accuracy as well as the phase of a first interferogram from an IS2 image mode data set (VV polarized). According to the schedule the image mode products of this beam products are the first to be validated [2]. This interferogram is one of the first ENVISAT/ ASAR int...

Interferometric data processing requires careful calibration and validation of the complex input products. Interferometric calibration comprises geometric and phase accuracy aspects. With respect to geometry, orbit and timing parameter have to be calibrated in order to allow accurate geo-coding and optimal processing of the interferometric products. Phase accuracy of the input complex products ...
متن کاملGeometric Validation of Low and High-resolution Asar Imagery
We present issues and solutions concerning the calibration and validation of ENVISAT ASAR image products – both their geometry and radiometry are investigated. Concerning geometric calibration, the slant range products (IMS, APS) offer the best available resolution. We tabulate differences between measured (in image products) and predicted (via geodetic position, precise state vectors, and rang...

Remote sensing methods to derive snow properties using both optical and SAR data are presented. The assimilation of the remote sensing products in the water balance and rainfall-runoff model LARSIM is demonstrated. The flood forecast centre in Karlsruhe applies LARSIM for the operational runoff forecast of the Neckar in the South West of Germany. A fully automatic algorithm to derive snow cover...
متن کاملApplication of Envisat Asar Data for Alpine Land Use Classification
The advantage of ENVISAT ASAR over its predecessors, namely ERS-1 and ERS-2, as a land observation tool resides in its multiple polarization and multi-look angle capabilities. As a radar sensor the ASAR backscattering coefficient is sensitive to the moisture content of the scattering media and its geometrical properties (i.e. size, shape, roughness, and orientation). From the quantitative analy...
